It is not often that we acquire substantial knowledge and insight from listening to a singular EP, let alone when the creator is just 17 years of age, however, 'Cognition' by the youthful 'Harvey Marwood' has convincingly altered this trend.
The Kent-based teenage wordsmith penetrated the densely populated rap industry in 2019; this was a result closely related to the recognition received from 'BBC Introducing', 'GRM Daily', and most impressively, artists 'Stormzy', and 'Aitch'. The echelon of this sector appreciation is incredible, but will be far from shocking once you have listened to 'Cognition'.
'Cognition' itself is formed of six closely bonded tracks, each of which showcase new skills, and influentially-delivered sentences from Harvey Marwood. Something worth noting about these six songs is that they are attractively lengthy. It is now unfortunately not uncommon to listen to a whole project which consists of a plethora of sub-three-minute tracks; this is another trend which Harvey Marwood alters with purpose.
Just one of the six sections of 'Cognition' falls into the depths of the sub-three-minute camp, which is notable in its own right. This said, producing such extensive songs could indeed prove to be a double-edged-sword - this is of course only the case should the content in each track not captivate the listener. Fans will not experience this potential issue on 'Cognition'.
We are convinced that every slice of the 'Cognition' cake will be devoured by those who pay attention. Attention being the key word in the previous statement. Harvey Marwood's content is more complex than it initially seems; yes it sounds great, yes the production is good, and the list goes on, but to truly appreciate it for all its worth, you must pay astute attention to the lyrics. The lyrics are the icing on the cake.
To best explain exactly what we are referring to above, we have detailed some of our favourite, highly diverse quotes from 'Cognition':
"I'm ahead of the game, I'm like BST, you man are standard like GMT, I'm getting in cheques, not like CRB." (Track - '17')
"I drink bare when I'm poring out my heart, in the studio in South, call that a Southern Comfort" (Track - 'Cognition Freestyle')
"This shit tests me, Hacksaw Ridge I'm in a battle but its mentally, so much pressure for young kids academically, I break too many bonds accidentally like chemistry" (Track - 'Psychic')
Alongside these almost un-decipherable snippets from 'Cognition', Harvey Marwood delivers equally skilled, but more excessively emotional lines throughout the EP. This ability to include, and more importantly, expertly express such emotions is simply outstanding. Rap music is about expression and relatability; Harvey Marwood ticks both of these boxes with a permanent marker, and in the process has cemented his stance in the genre. Please see our most liked emotion-filled extract from 'Cognition' below:
"In the comments I'm getting bare digs like JCB, there's good ones too, but I only see bad ones when I broadcast things like BBC." (Track - '17')
If this particular quote does not intrigue, and move you on an emotional level, this is no fault of Harvey Marwood. You must seek answers from within.
Whilst we cannot stress enough that 'Cognition' is an almost flawless debut EP from Harvey Marwood, we are, as always, excited to detail our personal track ratings; these are expressed below:
17 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cognition Freestyle - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Psychic - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
HM X Hen$haw - Radiation - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For us, '17' is a slither of quality above its five competitors. Its comprehensive amalgamation of grit, riddles, and emotion is what does it for us. It is, all things considered, a faultless spectacle. This said, each track could claim the top spot when listened to from another perspective.
