As always, competition for the DiSCOVERY 'Project Of The Week' was mammoth, however, Reading-based rapper - 'Songer' trolled, and flushed away alternative potential victors to claim his first DiSCOVERY trophy. The 'Project Of The Week' award is presented to Songer in radiant recognition of his unimaginably immense debut body of work 'Dream Workz'.
Released during the 2019 festive period, 'Dream Workz' was a phenomenal present to the world, and made fan's long-term fantasies of a Songer soundtrack become a reality. The 'Dream Workz' surge into listener's ears came shortly after a hat trick of highly successful Songer freestyles on YouTube channel 'BlackBox'. In many ways, Songer's hat trick was a perfect one, as each goal showcased a new element of his vocal arsenal.
Each of Songer's 'BlackBox' freestyles shook the scene's crossbar, and substantially surpassed 500,000 views, with the most successful release standing on an incredibly impressive 3,700,000 views.
Whilst freestyles and studio songs are absolutely both variations of the same, skill-heavy sport, they are also worlds apart. There is a plethora of artists in the industry who have created the most outrageously strong freestyles, however, when it comes to the amalgamation of a full-length project, they struggle. It seems Songer has not experienced these issues.
There is a multitude of impressive elements that conjoin to create the 'Dream Workz' spectacle, many of which seem to have been seamlessly transferred from Songer's famous freestyles, however, most impressive of all is the head, which stands on such youthful, 19 year old shoulders.
Songer raps incredibly self-assured rhymes throughout the totality of 'Dream Workz', which is admirable. This is most apparent when listening to tracks such as: 'No More Candles', 'Got It or You Haven't', and 'Dream of You'. Please see some poignant quotes below:
"proving again and again I'm the best with the pen"
"this a classic for your future son's hotbox"
"for me the problem was never whether I could be the best, it was whether I wanted to be the best"
The possession of this level of self-confidence is required by artists destined for the top, which is the path Songer is treading. Whilst having complete, unwavering faith in your own ability is imperative, it needs to be paired with lyrical, and vocal excellence in order to create the perfect rap recipe.
Throughout the entirety of the 10 track, 35 minute, and 27 second 'Dream Workz' masterpiece, all of these qualities are present, and in abundance. Songer provides listeners with wonderful wordplay, fascinating flows, total transparency, and powerful punchlines. These elements, when experienced together, are simply mind-blowing.
Whilst we would not be writing about 'Dream Workz' if we felt only some tracks held value, and we strongly suggest that you listen to the full body of work, we completely appreciate some of you will only have the time to listen, and only be suited to some songs. Track Of The Project - 'Dream of You'
As returning readers will know, this is always the toughest segment of the article, and Songer has not made it any easier for us on this occasion. There is a whole herd of songs that we could've allocated as the pack leaders, however, our personal opinion sees 'Dream of You' head up the 10 strong flock of tracks.
This is for numerous reasons, but mainly due to the paralysing pain which is portrayed by Songer with sobering excellence. As touched upon above, 'Dream of You' encloses elements of Songer's self belief, but also, some of his deepest, most torturous insecurities. This fusion is why 'Dream of You' has been awarded the 'Track Of The Project'.
Lastly, we wanted to give an honourable mention to 'Hard', which as you can see, is actually our joint lowest scoring 'Dream Workz' track. Whilst we have rated this track lower than others, it still holds the same undeniable Songer quality, but in a different form. Our rating is based around the opinion that Songer's sound is more powerful when complimented by deeper, less skippy beats. This said, 'Hard' may appeal highly to other listeners.
