This weeks DiSCOVERY 'Project Of The Week' is awarded to the undisputed heavyweight champion of the 'vastly talented, yet under-appreciated' rap division - Coops, with his 2014 released masterpiece 'Lost Soul'.
'Lost Soul' is Coops' debut mixtape and is arguably still, to this day, the pinnacle of his incredible strong, five piece discography. The distinctive 'Lost Soul' sound began to radiate through fans' eardrums shorty after Coops' very first live performance, a series of events that is typical for many emerging artists, however, the stature of Coops' initial live spectacle was far from typical.
Many of today's world renowned artists, such as seven times 'Grammy' nominated rapper - Travis Scott, began their now decorated careers by pouring their hearts and souls out to half empty, and somewhat unengaged crowds, this was certainly not the case for Coops. As a result of triumphing in the 'Choice FM Breakthrough Competition' in 2013, Coops' reward was a support performance, to none other than Nas, in the O2 London.
Regardless of personal opinions on Nas, who is widely renowned to be the greatest Hip Hop artist of all time, opening for someone of such status would be an unimaginable experience for anyone, however, when listening to Coops' music, Nas' influence is ever present, which no doubt iced the already perfect, debut performance Coops cake.
'Lost Soul' consists of 17 tracks, each one has individual, unique levels of brilliance, whilst moulding seamlessly together as one, to create a national treasure of the streets. It is both common and understandable that more extensive musical compilations tend to unconsciously compromise on quality in order to provide fans with sheer volume. Coops was clearly fixated on gifting avid fans with both quality and quantity, the precise execution of these strategic focus areas is nothing short of remarkable. Without getting carried away, DiSCOVERY strongly believe that few Hip Hop projects of 15 songs+ will rival 'Lost Soul'.
As touched upon above, Coops' sound is distinctive, precise and rarely stumbled upon, especially in the UK. Influencers contributing to the 'Lost Soul' work of art are evident throughout; artists such as Nas, Biggie Smalls and 2Pac appear to have had a clear, positive effect on Coops' sound, and the latter two, in many ways live on through 'Lost Soul's' presence in listener's ears each day.
The late, great Biggie Smalls does in fact feature during the introduction of headline 'Lost Soul' track 'Pass da Weed'. The short injection of Biggie Smalls is concise, humorous and adds substantial value to an already incredible piece of music. To hear how Coops acquired the Biggie Smalls sample, legally, we suggest that you go and watch this video. (Click Here)

Track Of The Project - 'So Cold (Ft Benny Banks & Sophie Faith)'
As you can see, the ratings above are simply incredible, which made allocating a clear winner virtually impossible. With this in mind, we had to resort to preference, at DiSCOVERY, our personal favourite track is 'So Cold', the fusion of the young, hungry Benny Banks in his prime with the incredible Coops, complimented by the silky smooth backing vocals of Sophie Faith is just too much to comprehend. This said, we understand this choice may be controversial so, please comment your favourite track / tracks below!
To conclude, the ability of a rapper should be measured by how connected you feel to them after you have dedicated a substantial amount of time to listen to their content, and in many ways get to know the artist as an individual. Coops' immense ability to touch and cleanse your soul when given just 51 minutes and 42 seconds is reminiscent of a highly qualified therapist's.
Once you have listened, lived and breathed the 'Lost Soul' sound, you will feel as if you have known Coops for a lifetime, such can only be said for the truly great albums such as Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt and few others. For this reason, amongst many others, 'Lost Soul' is the worthy winner of DiSCOVERY's Project Of The Week.
In closing, for dedicated members of the rap community, you will have seen that the widely loved Black The Ripper, who features in Coops' track 'Half Time' tragically passed away on the 6th of April 2020, at the mere age of 32 years old. Our thoughts at DiSCOVERY are with Black The Ripper's friends, family and loved ones during this horrific time.
