Standing at the pinnacle of DiSCOVERY's 'Track Of The Week' podium is Leeds' widely accomplished and youthful individual 'Graft'. This accolade is presented to Graft in recognition of his raw, yet refined piece 'Nothing but Facts Freestyle'.
Graft is an artist who is blessed with a vast array of talents, both on, and off the pitch, quite literally. Prior to raising the microphone to his lips, Graft represented both Leeds, and Rotherham FC. In the height of summer, 2018, Graft parted ways with Rotherham FC, a decision which was driven forcefully by his high profile rap recognition earlier in the year.
As a result of the labour Graft had clearly dedicated to perfecting his craft, praise was earned from UK rap royalty, Wretch 32. Whilst Wretch 32's kind words were still ringing in Graft's appreciative ears, the self confessed 'Godfather' of grime, Wiley, engaged with Graft and subsequently booked him as a support artist, for Leeds based show. As if these accomplishments were not enough to satisfy Graft's clearly vast ambitions, he went on to grasp the highly respected and sought after MOBO 'UnSung' award.
Capitalising on the immense decibel level noise created in early 2018, Graft proceed to release back to back videos on world renowned YouTube channel 'Link Up TV', and had airtime on BBC1 Xtra show 'Sounds of The Verse'. Both stages were taken to effortlessly by Graft, and were utilised effectively as rungs to climb the UK grime ladder.
Now recognised as the figurehead of the Leeds grime scene, Graft is going from strength to strength and must now be considered a formidable heavyweight of the highly competitive genre. 2020 has been an aggressive year for Graft thus far seeing him release two tracks: 'Nothing but Facts Freestyle', which of course is the reason you are analysing this text, and brand new single 'T.O.P'.
'Nothing but Facts Freestyle' itself has the DiSCOVERY 'Track Of The Week' crown lodged firmly on its head on this occasion for a number of strong reasons. Firstly, it is clear that Graft has effectively harnessed aggressive, and in many ways disruptive emotions in a positive way to create a stunning piece of art. This is significant, because if such emotions were expressed through a more physical form of release, Graft may have been the face of an article with a very different headline.
An element which can lace any already great track with the icing listeners desire to devour, is a well-constructed video. Graft has not let fans down in this department when it comes to 'Nothing but Facts Freestyle'. The short film adds a new dimension to what is an immersive piece of audio.
